How can one explain the sheer speculative share purchase madness that gripped Saudi investors who participated in the Dana Gas IPO in Dubai Financial institutions get lured into this short-term profit making trap, whereby they extend loans for share trading, make commissions on larger and larger volumes of trading, and feel reluctant to take on longer-term, riskier investment projects. Money it seems, grows on trees in fairy tales, as well as in bank IPO counters in Saudi and Gulf banks. But history is replete with examples of booms and collapses of stock markets going back over two hundred years, starting with the famous South Sea Bubble of 1720, to the October 1987 Black Monday global stock market crash. The only difference today is that stock market volumes and market capitalization is much larger, and falls of 5-10 percent in one day which could have caused massive panic in the past, have been treated with caution, but not much alarm, until now. However, there are differences now and then. Firstly, the number of people participating in the stock markets has increased many folds, as participants feel that investment in this activity will generate extra income, quickly, painlessly and change their way of life. This is reminiscent of the real estate boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s in Saudi Arabia, when many people made money from real estate speculation. The results then, were that college students dropped out of the educational system, lured by quick profit, while their colleagues struggled to make their way in life after graduating. Social pressures mounted then, and now, for making quick profits. Educational output suffered as students opted for less rigorous academic subjects, as well as jobs that gave them the opportunity and flexibility to turn to part-time real estate speculation. The same is happening now. Stories are common of employees becoming share-trading experts, ignoring their jobs, concentrating on market trends, or more appropriately, market rumors. Families in Saudi Arabia, if we are to believe anecdotal evidence, are now split apart, with wives and husbands arguing over which shares to sell or buy and how to distribute profits or losses. Young children are entering the share trading field and making fast money who can blame them if they also drop out of the education system if they can make several million riyals before they are 19 Let us hope that some sanity prevails soon, and that investors realize the basic fundamentals of trading any thing that goes up without an underlying business or financial rationale will always come down. At the same time, the current stock market correction should give us all time to set back and reflect on basic fundamentals. The Saudi economy is one of the strongest in the region. Oil prices are going to remain firm for many years. The massive infrastructure projects are gathering pace. The number of IPOs are increasing. In the long term, the Saudi stock market will gradually rise to a more sustainable level to support the economic fundamentals of the economy. Mr. Thielemans, who turns 84 next month, has gamboled through seemingly the entire landscape of mainstream jazz during his career from gypsy swing to bebop and every variety since. Along the way he developed an exuberantly expressive voice on the chromatic harmonica, pioneering its use as a solo instrument. And at every turn he made friends, including an illustrious and kaleidoscopic array of fellow musicians. What was somewhat surprising about The Magic of Toots: A Celebration of Toots Thielemans was the way the feeling suffused the concert, overcoming even its all-star conceit. What could have felt tediously programmatic came across as a genuine celebration. For the rest of the night he was perched on a stool at center stage, harmonica in hand it wasnt his intention to merely bask in acclaim. In an all-acoustic first half, Mr. Thielemans traded sentiments not only with Mr. Hancock but also with the clarinetist Paquito DRivera (on Brussels in the Rain, a song by Mr. DRivera) and the tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano (on the balladic essay Body and Soul and a gallant theme by Mr. Thielemans, For My Lady). The strongest chemistry, not surprisingly, was between Mr. Thielemans and his regular partner Kenny Werner, the concerts main pianist and musical director. Backed by a sensitive rhythm section, they amplified the sumptuous melancholy of Michel Legrands Windmills of Your Mind. Mr. Thielemans likes to luxuriate in a melody his most natural cadence is a regal yet confessional rubato. He employed it to marvelous effect on Ne Me Quitte Pas, the Jacques Brel chanson his soaring, entreating interpretation, performed as a duet with Mr. Werner, deserved the standing ovation it received. Much of the second half was more rhythmic, with an emphasis on the Brazilian music Mr. Thielemans has also fruitfully explored. The guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves joined the ensemble, presenting a fetching original, Felicia e Bianca the pianist Eliane Elias did the same, singing in a sensuous alto and contributing a handsome ballad. Ivan Lins, the popular singer, brought star presence to a pair of songs, including Madalena, one of his earliest hits. Mr. Thielemans introduced his own early hit, the lilting waltz Bluesette, on guitar, the instrument he played before picking up the harmonica. But before long, the song morphed into a samba, for a parade of solo turns. Some of the guests, like Ms. Elias, achieved a sparkling charisma. But no one stole the spotlight from Mr. Thielemans he was having giddy fun, and the feeling was contagious. Last night, the band was crowned the winner of the 25,000 Australian Music Prize - enough to buy a new mattress, you might think. Or a new dog, at least. Everyone keeps asking us if wed go out on the town and were sort of like, well, the money is allocated, Liddiard said yesterday, just before the winner was announced at the Museum of Contemporary Art. But because weve been on tour six months and played 120 shows in five months, all our gear is wrecked, weve got debts, weve got air fares, weve got bills. If theres any money left over, we might get some sushi. The Drones nudged out finalists Ben Lee, Wolfmother, TZU, the Go-Betweens, the Devastations, the Mess Hall and Tex, Don and Charlie to win the prize. Liddiard says having 66 music industry representatives as judges, including musicians such as Clare Bowditch and Tim Freedman, gives the inaugural Australian Music Prize more credibility than the Aria Awards. The Arias, when you sort of boil it down, is a celebrity competition. If Sophie Monk can do well at the Arias, then its not really about music, is it he said yesterday. But for this prize, the people who are judging it are more involved. Jesus, we make the f---in music, give us a go at judging it for once. The Drones, who are Liddiard, drummer Michael Noga, guitarist Rui Pereira and bassist Fiona Kitschin, won the prize for their third album, Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By, which takes its name from an Indian proverb. It sounds kind of mean, but its quite a nice, non-confrontational approach to life, said Liddiard. The band is on tour with the indie rock legends Dinosaur Jr and will play at Sydneys Hopetoun Hotel on Friday. Then it is off overseas for another world tour, and back home for the release of the new album, Gala Mill, in September. Long term traders will work from end of day data and look to hold trades for a few weeks up to many months. Usually trend trading. No need to watch the markets intraday. Why Because if I can see the CURRENT state of buying and selling in the market NOW, then I can make a reasoned and fairly accurate estimate of what the market will do in the next few minutes and moments. My prediction will not be based on some secret formula it will not be based on some esoteric sounding indicator, nor on some complex mathematical equation. No, it will be based on my evaluation of the current state of supply and demand. Predicting the long-term movements of the markets is a guessing game. All we have to go on is the past all we can reasonably do is assume that what has happened in the past will continue to happen in the future. Basically that is what trend following is, making the assumption that the past equals the future. In my trading world, the only law that works is that of supply and demand: if there are more buyers than sellers then the market will go up and if there are more sellers than buyers the market will go down. It matters not one iota the whys and wherefores of the buyers and the sellers. It does not matter that a trader has chosen to sell now because the 9 period moving average has crossed the 14 period or because he has just lost his shirt or because he is taking a profit or because he is just plain bored. No, I dont care why a trader has entered a buy or a sell order, I just care that they have, by their act, added to either the buying or the selling pressure. In a situation that seems to mirror that of market-leading -- and already sued -- local portal baidu, Yahoo Chinas music pages link directly to unlicensed downloads and streams of songs by domestic and international artists. Deep linking, as the practice is known, differs from sending Web searchers to other pages that may host unlicensed music. Instead, the links on Baidu and Yahoo directly trigger a download of music hosted by sites that appear to be unaffiliated with Yahoo. The most obvious examples of apparent copyright infringement on the Yahoo China site include deep links to music by the Beatles. The bands catalogue has never been licensed to a digital service. This is similar to top100.cn, a Chinese music Web site that claimed legitimacy but sold unlicensed music. Yahoo China management denies that such links are examples of copyright violations. Yahoo is a directory of whats on the Web, says Porter Erisman, international marketing VP of Beijing-based Alibaba International, the company that manages Yahoo China. Erisman says that if content is streaming or being downloaded from another site, such violations would be the responsibility of that site. Yahoo China doesnt actually post the works which (users) are downloading, Erisman says. California-based Yahoo paid 1 billion for a 40 stake in Internet auction site Alibaba last August, then turned over management and operation of its China portal to Alibaba. Yahoo China is a wholly owned subsidiary of U. S.-based Internet portal Yahoo. The U. S. operation yahoo links directly to yahoo. cn, which makes yahoo users three clicks from downloading unlicensed music. Yahoo absolutely supports the widespread protection of copyright laws and strongly opposes the violation of copyright protections by companies or individuals, a Yahoo representative wrote in an e-mail. Yahoo aims to respect all intellectual property rights and will remove any content when we become aware of material that infringes on copyrights. It is worth noting that as of October 2005, alibaba operates and manages the Yahoo China business, including its search compliance processes. Chinese courts have ruled against deep linking in seemingly similar cases. Baidu was found guilty of copyright infringement by the Beijing Peoples Local Court September 16, 2005, in a case brought by Shanghai Bu-sheng Music Culture Media, the local distributor for EMI. Baidu has appealed the ruling, and appears to continue to post copyright-infringing links. Like Baidu, Yahoo China deep links to downloads from a host of internationally popular artists. Yahoo. cn takes the unlicensed digital music experience one step further, offering access to streaming songs. Once users are logged into their Yahoo accounts -- U. S. yahoo accounts work -- they can select from a list of hundreds of artists to open a new Web page with Yahoo formatting and Yahoos logo that will stream the music. As with the downloads, this music appears to be hosted by sites unaffiliated with Yahoo. Billboard also found links on yahoo. cn for ringtone downloads at 3721, a site bearing the Yahoo name and logo and registered to Alibaba Corp. of Hong Kong. Users of 3721 are asked to provide their name, cell phone number and handset model before a ringtone is sent to their phone for a charge of 2 renminbi (25 cents). A Chinese software and keyword engine, 3721 Network Software was acquired by Yahoo for 120 million in 2003. Billboard was unable to determine the licensing status of ringtones sold on 3721. But the Beatles music, which has never been made available for ringtones, was for sale. Industry executives say Yahoo Chinas music service clearly violates their copyrights. We have not licensed anything to Yahoo China, says Swee Wong, Hong Kong-based managing director of Sony BMG China. Our view is that they are in the same category as Baidu, using deep links to make available our repertoire illegally. Yahoo China links to sites offering downloads of tracks by Sony BMG artists, including Michael Jackson and Avril Lavigne. Sony BMG star Kelly Clarksons hit Because of You could be downloaded and streamed for free and appeared to be for sale as a ringtone. Yahoo China is as bad as Baidu, where illegal MP3 search accounts for the majority of the traffic, echoes Ken Cheung, Warner Music Asia Pacifics new media/business development VP, also based in Hong Kong. Yahoo China deep linked to tracks from Green Day, a Warner Music Group act. Other links to such acts as Eminem and Coldplay represent the remaining major labels. Independent labels have also been affected. We dont have a licensing agreement with Yahoo China, says a representative for leading Tokyo-based independent label Avex. Yet the Yahoo China Web site features links to MP3 files of songs by such Avex acts as Japanese diva Ayumi Hamasaki. Sony BMG Chinas Wong says the Asia Pacific regional office of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the music business main lobbying arm, sent Yahoo China cease-and-desist warnings on behalf of the four major international labels in December. In an e-mailed statement, IFPI general counsel Geoff Taylor stopped short of confirming the letters, but wrote, It appears that the China Yahoo service is infringing our members copyrights by making available via deep links songs that they have not been licensed to distribute. We have raised our concerns with Yahoo and China Yahoo. We are hoping that this activity will now be stopped. In the meantime, we are reserving our members rights to take legal action if it proves necessary. Chinas difficulties in controlling piracy are well documented. The IFPI estimates that 90 of the music sold in China, the worlds 20th-largest music market, is from pirated sources. Yahoo is facing a lot of competition in China from local search engines and portals, and with Baidus music service being so popular they need to start offering the same services to keep up, says Vivek Couto, executive director of Hong Kong-based consulting firm Media Partners Asia. The Yahoo China operation is no stranger to controversy. According to human-rights group Amnesty International, Yahoo provided account-holder information on journalist Shi Tao to Chinese state authorities who had accused Shi in April 2004 of illegally providing state secrets to foreign entities by using his Yahoo e-mail account to send an e-mail to the United States. Excluding CD-DVD combos, suppliers last year sold 21.4 million music DVDs, up from 20.6 million in 2004, according to Nielsen Entertainment research presented at the second annual Music DVD Awards. That translates to nearly 4 growth compared with growth of less than 1 for the DVD business overall. Even so, music DVDs account for just 2.7 of total music transactions recorded in 2005, the first year the total number of transactions topped 1 billion. CDs still account for the vast majority of music purchases, Nielsen research shows, with 61.7, followed by digital tracks at 35.2. Among retailers, mass merchants are in the lead when it comes to music DVD sales, enjoying 7 growth in 2005. Also on the upswing is the DualDisc, a hybrid that consists of a bonded disc with CD content on one side and DVD content on the other. Nielsen research shows that since the formats official bow in February 2005, 9.7 million DualDiscs have been snapped up by consumers, or 15 of total music sales. During the conference, produced by trade publication Home Media Retailing in partnership with The Hollywood Reporter, DEG: the Digital Entertainment Group and the Video Software Dealers Assn. panelists discussed ways to grow the market while realizing music DVDs always will be a niche business. Music DVDs can serve as a strong branding opportunity for an artist or group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment senior vp sales Harry Safter said. His companys release of a Los Lonely Boys DVD served as a bridge between two album releases, keeping interest and visibility high for the Texas-based country-rock group. Labels primarily consider DualDisc an audio product, and they arent abandoning the practice of releasing double-disc sets that include a DVD and CD separately. The days of a single-format world are over, said Bill Sondheim, executive vp at DualDisc Worldwide for Sony BMG. Also possibly on the horizon are more window-like strategies for music DVDs and the music market as a whole, panelists said. The ideal window strategy for a music DVD would be to time it with an artists new album release and tour, offering a digital-cinema blast around the street date and then have a TV airing, said Steve Sterling, senior vp programming and production at Live Nation, formerly Clear Channel Entertainment Home Video. If I could schedule that every time, Id feel good about spending 1 million-2 million on a release, he said. But its still art we are dealing with here, and its very hard to put art in a bottle, let alone on a schedule. How to monetize all the opportunities that the Internet and digital delivery can offer is a key issue the business must start addressing to keep up with the consumer, panelists said. Music DVDs need more and better marketing to draw in the core fans and broaden the awareness of product as it hits the streets. All professional traders have a trading plan. Lets look at what your written trading plan should cover: Trading concept - What anomaly is your trading strategy intending to exploit Timeframe - The shorter the timeframe the more trades that can be made. However short term trading leads to lower reward:risk ratios and higher commission costs. Instrument - There are many different ways to trade essentially the same idea - options, futures, exchange traded funds etc. Which offers the most reward for your trading concept Entry - How will you open your trade Exit - How will you close your trade - A stop loss should be placed at a point where the trading concept become invalid, this could be a specific price or a certain length of time. A profit exit must also be established - again either a certain target price or a timed exit. Money Management - How much capital is required to trade the strategy and how much should be risked on each trade to maximise returns whilst minimising the risk of blowing the account End of Day Routine - At the end of each day every trade should be compared to the trading plan and any variances should be addressed. Remember the plan is their for a reason and you must trade it exactly. If a change is required then it should be properly tested before being added to the plan. No decisions should be made whilst a trade is live. Brokers - Which broker will you use and how will you trade Automating a trading plan through the brokers API will help to eliminate any emotional responses. Your plan will require constant revision as the market dynamics change. If you have noticed a market anomaly then its very like that many of your competitors have as well. He was thought to be 67, though like many Africans of his generation, his exact age is uncertain. Tour, one of world musics giants, was best-known for his 1995 collaboration with American guitarist Ry Cooder, Talking Timbuktu, which won him his first Grammy. He won again this year in the world music category for In the Heart of the Moon, performed with fellow Malian Toumani Diabate. Tour was born in 1939 in the northern Sahara desert trading post of Timbuktu. He learnt to play the gurkel, a traditional African instrument, at an early age, and later took up the guitar, becoming arguably one of the finest guitarists the continent has produced. Though he was championed by Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, Tour became frustrated with being referred to as the African John Lee Hooker. Sunday Times critic David Hutcheon, who interviewed Tour on three occasions, said of his music: Although he would argue strongly that the blues did not exist in Mali, that the music he played belonged to a different culture, Tour was rock musics strongest and most obvious link to its African roots before the transatlantic slave trade. Listen to John Lee Hooker, listen to Hendrix, Led Zeppelin or Jack White and the debt owed to the desert that Tour called home becomes obvious. Despite winning worldwide acclaim as a musician, Tour saw his main role in life as that of a farmer and dedicated himself to better the agricultural and social situation in Niafunk, his home village in the semi-desert region in northern Mali, and was officially recognised when he was appointed mayor of the region in 2004. In the summer of 2005 he sparked controversy by refusing to perform at Live8, declaring Bob Geldofs last-minute decision to invite leading African artists was an insult. Today, radio stations across Tours native Mali suspended regular play, sending his signature sounds out over airwaves instead. World Circuit, Tours record label, said in an announcement that, Ali Farka Tour was a true original. An exceptional guitarist, he transposed the traditional music of his native north Mali and single-handedly brought the style known as desert blues to an international audience. So, in actuality, theyre electronically trading a currency-pair and the price that is quoted to us is the exchange rate between the two currencies. In other words, simply the quoted price is how many of the one currency is worth 1 of the other currency. EUR/USD last trade 1.2850 - One Euro is worth 1.2850 US dollars. The first currency (in this example, the EURO) is referred to as the base currency and the second (/USD) as the counter or quote currency. The FOREX has a DAILY trading volume of around 1.5 trillion dollars - 30 times larger than the combined volume of all U. S. equity markets. This means that 1,498,574 skilled traders could each take 1 million dollars out of the FOREX market every day and the FOREX would still have more money left than the New York Stock exchange every day The FOREX plays a vital role in the world economy and there will always be a tremendous need for the FOREX. International trade increases as technology and communication increases. As long as there is international trade, there will be a FOREX market. The FX market has to exist so a country like Japan can sell products in the United States and be able to receive Japanese Yen in exchange for US Dollar. Theres plenty of money to be made using FOREX for plenty of traders that use the right trading techniques / tactics that will allow them to profit immensely. And, with only 5 of the daily turnover of volume coming from banks, government and large corporations who need to hedge, the other 95 is for speculation and profit.
